Epidural Steroid Injections: A Treatment for Back Pain

by TOI Admin March 8, 2016

Epidural steroid injections (commonly referred to as “epidurals” or “cortisone injections”) are performed to help relieve back pain or neck pain. Epidurals can also diminish the associated pain that travels into the extremities, like your legs (sciatica).

How do epidurals work?

Epidurals are performed with the help of fluoroscopy (x-rays) to help confirm the needle placement. Once the needle is properly positioned, steroid is injected into the epidural space, a thin space in the spinal canal. This steroid helps to decrease inflammation, which is one of the proposed sources of the pain.

What are the benefits of getting an epidural?

The benefits of receiving an epidural for back, neck, or leg pain can vary depending on the patient. Benefits can include:

  • Pain relief
  • Increased quality of life
  • Minimize the need for other pain relief medications
  • Delay or avoid surgery

Both Dr. Kinard and Dr. Vihlen perform epidurals on a daily basis at The Orthopaedic Institute in Gainesville, FL. Please click HERE to request an appointment.
