by TOI Admin March 19, 2012

The Orthopaedic Institute prides itself on helping patients achieve their personal wellness goals by providing comprehensive musculoskeletal care that is unsurpassed in quality, accessibility and compassion. TOI instills these same core values in promoting healthy lifestyles for its employees, both in the office and off the clock.

Over 40 TOI employees have started the first segment of a company-sponsored, fitness boot camp inGainesville,LakeCityandOcala. Classes kicked off earlier this month with licensed, experienced trainers from 807 Wellness Group inGainesville, personal trainer Kelly Erkinger inLakeCityandBrazilianJiuJitsuAcademyinOcala.

Traditional fitness boot camp programs consist of a combination of aerobic training, strength building and stretching. Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any health concerns. Below are stretching guidelines from theAmericanAcademyof Orthopaedic Surgeons, to keep in mind while embarking on any new fitness venture:

  • Always warm up before you stretch. Stretching cold muscles can cause injury.
  • Stretch slowly and gently. Breathe into your stretch to avoid muscle tension. Relax and hold each stretch 10 to 30 seconds.
  • Do not bounce your stretches. Ballistic (bouncy) stretching can cause injury.
  • Stretching should not hurt. If you feel pain, take the stretch easier, breathe deeply and relax into it.
