The Orthopaedic Institute’s James W. Berk, M.D., board certified sports medicine physician, was published in the latest edition of “House Calls” by the Alachua County Medical Society. The Summer 2011 edition featured Dr. Berk’s story, “Climbing for a Cause,” which focused on his recent philanthropic initiative, the Climb for Cancer Foundation’s Kilimanjaro Expedition fundraiser- a 19,340 foot climb of the highest mountain in Africa.

The Climb for Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation that focuses on easing the pain and suffering of those affected by cancer and funds research grants, gives children a chance to participate in cancer support camps and offers psycho-social programs that provide support to cancer patients and their families.

Altogether, 12 climbers raised a total of about $180,000. The minimum fundraising goal for each individual climber was $10,000. Teamed with friend and local business owner Lori Parent, the pair raised about $22,000 through personalized Climb for Cancer websites, emails and letters to friends and with the employees of The Orthopaedic Institute.
