Heart disease and stroke are the Nation’s number one and three killers, claiming more than 865,000 American lives each year. The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

On September 24, TOI’s group of 29 walkers, “TOI Heartthrobs”, participated in the 2011 Alachua County Heart Walk – the American Heart Association’s event that brings communities together to raise funds and celebrate progress in the fight against cardiovascular diseases.

The 5k event also featured demonstration booths from local vendors, live music, food and a pet contest at the North Florida Regional Medical Center Duck Pond.

TOI employees contributed over $900 through two “jeans days” and t-shirt sale fundraisers in September alone. A total of $208,982 was raised through the entire event.

All proceeds will directly benefit the American Heart Association’s mission of improving patient care, advocating for better health, reaching out to populations at risk, raising awareness, protecting the future and educating Americans.
